District #14
Volunteers
Multnomah County R.F.P.D. #14 is an all-volunteer Fire Department.
The current force of 38 officers and firefighters recently
welcomed a new recruit class of 12 members who began a five
month long training period to become certified. They are
being trained in two groups, the first of which finished
in March 2007. The second group will complete their academy
in June 2007. After certification they will serve a six-month
probationary period, learning to operate the District’s
10 fire apparatus vehicles and going on supervised calls.
LONG TIME VOLUNTEER RETIRES FROM
R.F.P.D. 14
Honored at the R.F.P.D. #14 Annual Recognition
Dinner this January, Doug Quinn retired
from the Department at the end of 2006 after 47 years
of dedicated service. Doug was a firefighter, Lieutenant,
Supply Officer and Captain during that time, always
bringing a quiet and professional strength to the job.

One of only three volunteers
in the history of the Department to give more than
40 years service, his long commitment and dedication
are an inspiration to the rest of the volunteers.
Doug was joined, over the years at R.F.P.D. #14 by
his brother Bill, father Aaron and son Mark.
Also honored was his wife, Carol, who spent many years
supporting us as District Clerk. Volunteers often
have to sacrifice personal time, and could not succeed
in their tasks without the understanding and support
of their families. Thank you, Doug and Carol.

ROPE RESCUER MOVES ON
We recently said goodbye to another long time
volunteer firefighter. Jerry Chinn
retired from his regular job in early May and moved
away from the community. |
|
Jerry was a very active responder
for R.F.P.D. #14, serving as a Firefighter, Supply Officer,
Lieutenant, and Captain during his 14 years of service.
He was also the leader on our Rope Rescue and Water
Rescue teams. Jerry, we wish you well in your retirement,
and we appreciate all that you have given to this community
and the Fire Department.

FIFTY YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG!
Bob Layton reaches the milestone
of 50 years service this June. He is still one of our
most active responders, and has his hand in nearly everything
the Fire Department does. |
|
The community has declared
him this year’s Grand Marshall of the Corbett
4th of July Parade, an honor he will share with his
wife Dona.
Bob, currently a Lieutenant for R.F.P.D. #14, has served
as a Firefighter, Captain, Assistant Chief, and Chief,
and seen many changes to the Fire Department over the
years. He was Chief in 1977, when two firefighters were
tragically killed while responding at the scene of an
auto accident. He helped guide the Fire Department and
the community through that stressful time, as he has
guided many responders throughout the years, always
setting the example of what a volunteer firefighter
should be. His brother Jim, nephew Tom, and grandson
Shawn have followed him into service at R.F.P.D. #14.
Bob was selected as the Oregon State Volunteer Firefighter
of the Year in 2000, and received a Lifetime Achievement
Award from the Oregon Volunteer Firefighters’
Association in 2005. In addition to his regular response,
Bob spends much of his time delivering Fire Department
vehicles to service and repair.
